Access Control Systems

Access control systems have evolved…have you?

Access control systems in one form or another have been with us since humans first walked the earth. From our distant ancestors clenched spear in hand ready to protect their dwellings they considered home, to less intimidating but equally effective modern day access control systems. Over the very flames our distant relatives first lit and told stories that warned of danger, today, fan the very flames of the cautionary ‘big bad monster’ stories we were read to as children. The need for security has long been engrained into our DNA, and this continues to be reinforced as we are bombarded by news stories on every hour warning us of the threats to our security.

…Some things never seem to change. Though unlike our distant cousins, at least our lives are more varied and we don’t have to spend all day long sharpening our spears. Our primal survival responses, now less physically demanding, have evolved to help us deal with challenges that are more surreptitious in nature. Instead, we can sharpen our senses using high-tech security systems to protect our territories that have now become our businesses, staff & assets. The need for such measures is perhaps more necessary than ever, as these alarming statistics indicate:

A report by the Federation of Small Business (FSB) revealed crimes against small firms costs more than £12bn annually. These figures don’t take into account lost time or cancellation of business plans. And figures released by The Office of National Statistics, says employee theft (excludes personal theft from co-workers) amounts to more than £190m per year.

Would a serious breach in security make your business an open door?

Thanks to the continued technological progress & advancements in the security sector, a very strong arm has its hand firmly placed against the door in order to make your world a safer place. So the answer to this question is a resounding “No” but only if you take action and take advantage of the access control system technology available to you.

Access control systems range from stand-alone to software driven access control solutions that can integrate with other security measures, systems or software you may have in place. More advanced access control systems can assist or perform many of the functions you may hire security guards to do, taking the biggest slice of any security budget. To ensure you’re getting value for money, access control systems can be used to control & manage guard tour duties.

When we talk about access control systems, we tend to only think in terms of securing down the hatches while overlooking the enormous cost savings. As the above report indicates, we’re not just talking about business theft caused by unwanted intruders or psychological scars it can leave behind. No, it seems every business owner needs to give as much thought to internal security, as well as beyond the doors that face the outside world.

Door entry or access control systems what’s the difference?

Terminology that has indeed brought confusion to many, but broadly speaking, ‘access control systems’ refers to systems that allow independent ‘access’ through doors and barriers etc. by those allowed to gain entry. ‘Door entry systems’ and here’s where the confusion is, since they often share the same door lock / barrier lifting system. The main element comprises a door intercom system used mostly by visitors. The receptionist is then able to press a button on their phone or desk to release the door, without the need to leave their workstation.

For clarity, because customers will sometimes use either terminology when searching for these products, in order to cover both terms, when we talk about ‘access control systems’ on this page, we do so in terms of benefits to your business and how they work in general. The term ‘door entry systems’ here on our website, is used to describe our products. The door entry systems link will take you to our products page.
